Since 1996 for over a decade, VIKALP a society for sustainable development has been working for the development leading to upliftment of the tribal, poor in general and women, children and youth in particular since last 12 years. Its experience in grass root level in rural in the field related to overall development in a short span of 12 years includes

  1. Science and Technology Extensions: This is the core area of VIKALP’s mandate. Under this a project has been launched by VIKALP in 11 villages in Chimur block of Chandrapur district with headquarter  at village Mahadwadi. This is a non-funded project and being implemented with beneficiary cooperation and now self propelled.                                   
  1. Local Agenda 21: Action Plan Preparation for 21 identified villages: Organised 5 days workshop for the village functionaries at Mahadwadi to on local agenda 21. Process of local level initiatives commenced. Afforestation efforts of the villagers have shown results and the approach roads of the villages are covered with thick plantation; 
  1. Camps for Local Vaidus (Village Health Traditional Practitioners): A camp was organised with the objective of identifying the resources in the forest area. The village traditional health practitioners have had a rich wealth of knowledge which was locked in due to non-availability of the knowledge transformation mechanism. the camp had an interface of Vaidus with the village youths and the documentation of the practices. One hundred and forty species were identified and documented for the medicinal use;     
  1. Workshop for Youths: A five day workshop for the youths of 11 forest based villages was organised in association with Bhartiya Adim Jaati Sevak Sangh and SIDBI. The objective of the workshop was to introduce ; the sustainable harvesting of Non-Timber Forest Produce with due care to bio-diversity conservation    
  1. Micro-planning for NRM: Five days training for Master of Social Work students of Sardar Patel College was organised for micro-planning of Natural Resource Management of five villages around NRM Centre at Bawangaon  
  1. Natural Resource Management centre: the organisation has established a Natural Resource Management Training Centre on a leased land at Baongaon 40 km. from Nagpur to cater to the training needs of the farmers, village youths and tribal for resource use optimisation in 44 villages in Khapa circle in Saoner block. The centre at Khapa has turned into a farmers’ information centre and a proposal is in pipeline to make it a Community Learning and Information Centre of Govt. of Maharashtra.
  1. National Environment Awareness Programme: Programme on rain water harvesting was organised for the farmers.
  1. Computer Literacy: the organisation collected used and old working computers from friends and donors. these were then used to impart computer education in three schools through volunteer services.
  1. Free Computer Learning Centres: Free Computer Learning for rural youth has been targeted through the two ongoing centres, one at Bawangoan and the other at Karghata. The third centre has been started across the border in Madhya Pradesh at Sonpur  in Chhindwara district.  
  1. Value Education Camps: for last three years, the organisation has been conducting value education camps for the youths under the ages of Ministry of HRD .
  1. Centre at Karghata: VIKALP opened one centre on NRM training at village Karghata. The village is in the midst of forest and is accessible to other adjoining villages. So far 15 JFM committees have been strengthened through regular intervention at Karghata
  1. Advocacy and Networking: VIKALP is one of the constituents of the Maharashtra State Joint Forest Management Network. There are more than 25 no. of organisations in the network and VIKALP plays a facilitative role in the region of Vidarbha. Besides JFM, VIKALP is on the Committee constituted by State Government of Maharashtra for amendment of State GR on JFM  of the state as a member.
  1. Science and Technology Education Promotion: VIKALP has initiated a small beginning of promotion of Science and technology education. This is carried out in three centres viz. Karghata (Chandrapur) and Bawangoan (Nagpur/Rural) in Maharashtra; Sonpur (Chhindwara) in Madhya Pradesh. VIKALP has carried out initial consultations for taking up S&T extensions in rural parts of three states viz Chattisghar, UP, AP  and Jharkhand with the active association of   associates (individuals or institutions ) working in the states. Vikalp established its central nursery for green belt development between ordinance factory chanda and proposed coal project in Bhadravati taluka of Chandrapur district
  1. Resettlement and Rehabilitation of Project Affected Persons : VIKALP is associated with communities for their rights and fair compensation under lawful acquistion of the properties for the projects
  2. Karnataka Power Corporations in Bhadrawati Taluka of Chandrapur District and carried base line socio-economic  survey of the affected  community for furtherance of land acquisition activities and R&R issues  arise out of land acquisition  with special focus on community mobilisation for rehabilitation.
  3. Adani Power Limited for their  mining project in forest area near Chandrapur affecting nearly 1400 forest dependent communities. Work involve base line socioeconomic survey and preparation of participatory plan of action of rehabilitation and resettlement of project affected persons, land use income generation plan and corporate social responsibility plan.
  4. Rajastan Rajya Vidyut Nigam Limited’s  capital block in Sarjuga District is affecting nearly 7 villages. Detailed Socio-economic Survey, preparation of Rehabilitation Action Plan and Preparation of Corporate Social Responsibility Plan have been prepared by VIKALPA  and will be working on long term basis in Sarjuga district of Chhattisgarh using convergence programmes.
